Intentional Studio™ Advisory

Private, research-led advisory grounded in our proprietary frameworks for childhood capability, formative development and family experiences.

Intentional Studio™ develops proprietary frameworks exploring how children build the capabilities needed to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Our work is grounded in the Formative Capability Framework™, which considers how children’s experiences, environments and opportunities throughout their formative years can support the development of judgement, independence, adaptability and other essential human capabilities.

Through Formative Travel™, we apply this thinking to family travel, considering how destinations, experiences and challenges can create meaningful developmental opportunities at different ages and stages of childhood.

We offer a limited number of bespoke advisory engagements for families seeking to apply these frameworks to their own circumstances, with a particular focus on formative travel and capability-building experiences.  Our wider work also encompasses UK selective education, supported by our published books, guides and research.

What Makes Our Approach Different

Most education advice focuses on the next milestone: an entrance assessment, a selective school place or an academic result. Our approach is strategic and systems-level: we start with the capabilities children will need much further ahead.

Our frameworks combine insights from behavioural science, emotional intelligence and emerging research into learning in a technology-shaped world with an understanding of how people actually operate in demanding, fast-moving professional environments. This brings a different perspective to education: one informed not only by what schools reward today, but by the judgement, adaptability, critical thinking, problem-solving and intellectual independence that increasingly matter beyond them.

We consider the whole pathway, from the formative years and selective education through to university and eventually the workplace, while recognising that the environments today’s children will enter will continue to evolve.

Academic excellence remains important, but it is not enough on its own. Children also need opportunities to discover what interests them, develop genuine depth, encounter unfamiliar situations, make decisions and gradually build the confidence and judgement to operate independently.

Our proprietary Formative Capability Framework™ provides the structure for thinking about this development over time. Formative Travel™ applies the same principles to experiences beyond the classroom, using travel and exposure to different environments as one way of creating meaningful opportunities for discovery, participation and growing capability.

Rather than optimising a child for the next admissions hurdle, we look at the system as a whole and the environments they may ultimately need to navigate and distinguish themselves within.

What We Cover in a Consultation

Each engagement is tailored to your child, your family and the decisions you are considering. Depending on the focus, advisory may cover:

Education & Longer Term Pathways

  • Identify the schools and environments where your child is most likely to thrive, and build a competitive, intentional school list

  • Navigate selective education, preparation and school fit with a strategy aligned to your child’s readiness, strengths and longer-term development aligned to temperament and pace.

  • Look beyond admissions towards the capabilities increasingly valued in higher education and evolving professional environments

Formative Capability & Development

  • Apply our proprietary Formative Capability Framework™ to identify the capabilities your child would benefit from developing at their particular age and stage.

  • Develop an age-appropriate, longer-term framework of experiences and opportunities that allows children to practise judgement, independence, adaptability, problem-solving and emotional regulation.

  • Consider how education, extracurricular activities, family life and wider experiences can work together to build capability progressively, without unnecessary pressure or over-scheduling.

Formative Travel™ & Experiences

  • Develop a bespoke, age-progressive travel curriculum that combines exceptional family holidays with meaningful opportunities for learning, discovery and capability development.

  • Curate destinations, cultural encounters, wildlife experiences, expeditions and practical challenges around your child’s developmental stage, interests and emerging strengths.

  • Build continuity across journeys, allowing children to encounter different environments, develop perspective, exercise independence and progressively deepen their understanding of the world while keeping travel enjoyable, spontaneous and family-centred.

Interests, Depth & Distinction

  • Identify your child’s emerging interests, natural curiosities and individual strengths through exposure to different disciplines, environments and experiences.

  • Consider opportunities to develop genuine depth in areas that particularly engage them, moving beyond a conventional collection of academic and extracurricular achievements.

  • Support the gradual development of independent interests, distinctive perspectives and meaningful areas of expertise that may become increasingly valuable through education and later life.

Your Questions, Considered in Context

Every family has different priorities. Advisory is designed around the decisions that matter to you, whether that involves a particular educational transition, a significant family journey or a longer-term approach to your child's formative years.

Who This Is For

  • Private advisory is designed for families who want a more strategic, long-term approach to their child’s education, development and formative experiences.

  • It may be particularly useful if you:

  • Are navigating selective independent or grammar school admissions and want to think beyond simply passing the next assessment.

  • Want to understand how your child’s education, interests and wider experiences can work together over time, rather than approaching each decision in isolation.

  • Want to build your child’s capability, judgement, independence and adaptability through age-appropriate opportunities during the formative years.

  • Are interested in creating a longer-term Formative Travel™ curriculum, matching family travel and experiences to your child’s age, interests and developing capabilities.

  • Want to help your child discover and deepen genuine interests and areas of distinction, rather than simply accumulating activities.

  • Value an individual, research-led perspective rather than a standard formula or prescribed pathway.

  • That feels like the right amount. I wouldn't make “wealthy families who travel extensively” explicit — the travel proposition will self-select.

How It Works

1. Book a session.  Choose a consultation time that suits you.

2. Submit your pre-session notes. You’ll be able to share your child’s age, schools of interest, and key questions so the session is focused and efficient.

3. Your Consultation. Your session is tailored to your family. Depending on your needs, we may focus on education and selective admissions, formative capability development, Formative Travel™, interests and longer-term pathways, or a combination of these.

4. Receive personalised summary notes. You leave with a clearer view of your priorities, the decisions ahead and practical next steps appropriate to your child and family.

FAQs

What ages do you support?

Our work spans the formative years, with advice tailored to a child’s age, stage, temperament and emerging interests. For selective education, we support families from early years (3–5) through 11+, including 4+, 7+, 8+, 10+ and 11+ admissions, with 13+ considered where relevant. Formative Capability and Formative Travel™ advisory can extend across a broader age range.

Can we discuss more than one area in a consultation?

Yes. Advisory is tailored to the questions that matter to your family. A session might focus specifically on selective education, Formative Capability development or Formative Travel™, or consider how education, interests, experiences and longer-term development fit together.

Can we discuss more than one school?

Yes. A session can cover a full school list, comparisons and trade-offs, or a detailed exploration of a particular school. We can also consider how different school environments fit your child’s temperament, strengths and longer-term development.

Is your advice tied to tutors, schools, travel companies or agencies?

No. Intentional Studio™ is independent. We do not receive referral fees or commissions for our recommendations, allowing us to consider schools, tutors, experiences and other options according to what is appropriate for your family.

Do you replace tutoring?

No. Where tutoring is relevant, we can help you consider whether it is needed, when to begin, what level of support is appropriate, how to select a tutor and how to work effectively with one. The aim is purposeful preparation without unnecessary tutoring, pressure or burnout.

Does this work for children who are shy, anxious or late to warm up?

Yes. Temperament and developmental readiness matter. Our approach considers the individual child rather than assuming that the same school, preparation strategy, activity or experience will suit everyone. The aim is to create appropriate opportunities for growth without forcing a child into an environment or level of challenge that is wrong for them.

Do you support international families relocating to London?

Yes. We can help families understand the UK education system, evaluate school options and consider which environments may best fit their child, family circumstances and longer-term goals.

Will you tell us which schools we ‘should’ aim for?

We don’t impose a target list. We help you identify realistic and ambitious options, understand the differences between schools and consider where your child is most likely to thrive. The final decision remains yours.

What is the Formative Capability Framework™?

The Formative Capability Framework™ is our proprietary framework for thinking about how children develop the capabilities they will increasingly need to navigate education and later life. It considers the opportunities children have throughout the formative years to participate, practise, decide, recover, contribute and reflect and how these experiences can progressively support greater judgement, independence, adaptability and other capabilities.

What is Formative Travel™?

Formative Travel™ applies our capability thinking to family travel. We can help families develop a bespoke, age-progressive travel curriculum that remains enjoyable and family-centred while intentionally broadening the environments, cultures, challenges and experiences a child encounters as they grow.

It is not about turning every holiday into an educational exercise. It is about thinking across the years about what children experience, what they discover about themselves and the world, and the capabilities they have opportunities to practise along the way.

Do you plan or book travel?

We do not operate as a travel agency or make travel bookings. Our role is strategic: helping families think about the destinations and experiences that might form part of a longer-term Formative Travel™ approach. Families can then make arrangements independently or through their preferred travel specialist.  We work closely with affiliated agencies who can book travel for you.

Can you help my child develop their interests and strengths?

Our approach does not attempt to manufacture a particular profile or prescribe what a child should become. Instead, we consider how exposure to different subjects, environments and experiences can give children opportunities to discover what genuinely interests them and, where appropriate, develop greater depth over time.

Can we book follow-up sessions?

Yes. Some families need advice around one particular decision; others return at different stages as their child grows, educational decisions change or new interests and opportunities emerge.

Do you offer in-person consultations?

Sessions are primarily offered by video call and in-person advisory in London may be available depending on the nature and scope of the engagement.

Do you share notes after the session?

Yes, you will receive a written summary of the key recommendations and points discussed.

The Essential Edition

A Guide to Navigating a Competitive System & Maximising your Child’s Chances of Success with Confidence

The Essential Edition is a critical guide to 4+, 7+, 8+, 9+, 10+, 11+ and 13+ entry routes, timelines, and preparation

A clear, structured framework for parents who seek to understand the UK school system and navigate selective schools (grammar and independent).  Whether you're beginning, already in the process and feeling lost, or in an independent school unsure of what lies ahead.

This book explains how selective admissions really work: the entry routes, what schools expect and select for, readiness markers that matter, and the common ways families fail admissions and often lose time, money and focus.

More importantly, it shows how parents can guide the process with calm, intentional decisions - replacing fragmented advice thats chaotic with calm structure, clarity, confidence, and perspective, avoiding burnout or over-tutoring.
